Separation is never easy, and for LGBTIQA+ families, it comes with unique challenges, from navigating mainstream services built on heteronormative models to managing the emotional complexities of family restructuring. At Better Pride, we offer compassionate support and practical solutions tailored to meet the needs of rainbow families, including pets mediation and unique considerations for blended families.

What is Family Dispute Resolution (FDR)?

Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) is a specialised form of mediation that addresses family law matters, requiring accredited practitioners with expertise in navigating these complex issues. FDR assists separated families in communicating effectively to resolve disputes about:

  • Parenting arrangements and children’s needs.
  • Post-separation financial matters, including property mediation.
  • Pet parenting arrangements, which may form part of financial discussions within FDR.

At Better Place Australia, our Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners (FDRPs) are accredited with the Federal Attorney General’s Department and bring the knowledge and skills needed to handle sensitive family law matters. They create a safe and inclusive environment to help participants focus on what matters most—their children, their families, and their future.

Pets Mediation

For many families, pets are cherished members, and deciding their care post-separation can be emotionally challenging. Pets mediation can occur as part of FDR or as a separate, standalone process. This unique service helps:

  • Address pet custody and care arrangements.
  • Resolve disputes over financial responsibilities related to pets.
  • Ensure decisions prioritise the well-being of your beloved animals.

Blended Families and Separation

Blended families often face additional complexities during separation. These families may include multiple parents, co-parents, and caregivers who have played significant roles in the children’s lives. Our team provides tailored support to:

  • Help all caregivers navigate shared responsibilities and transitions.
  • Facilitate inclusive discussions that honour the roles of all family members.
  • Create agreements that reflect the diverse dynamics of blended families.

How FDR Works

Sessions are designed to ensure participants feel safe, comfortable, and heard. These sessions can take place:

  • In person, via video, or by telephone.
  • Jointly or separately, depending on individual preferences and dynamics.

The FDRP’s role is to facilitate conversations that prioritize:

  • Children’s needs and future well-being.
  • Equitable financial and property agreements.
  • Practical solutions for family and pet parenting arrangements.

Who Uses FDR?

FDR is beneficial for:

  • Separated families seeking a child-focused approach to resolving disputes.
  • Grandparents or significant others wanting to maintain relationships with children.
  • Families addressing financial or property matters.
  • Families requiring guidance for pet parenting arrangements, either as part of FDR or through standalone mediation.
  • Blended families seeking to navigate transitions while valuing the roles of all caregivers.
