Financial Counsellor (Bushfire affected area focus)

The Role

Financial Counsellors support clients to resolve or alleviate financial stress and to improve their ongoing financial capability and inclusion.  This role involves telephone-based service delivery via the National Debt Helpline supporting bushfire affected areas and may incorporate some face to face client work.  Key work tasks will include:

  • Assessing a client’s financial situation to understand the extent of a person’s financial difficulties and to identify options to address these;
  • Conduct interviews with clients over the phone (and where required, face to face) to deliver triage services;
  • Book face to face appointments for clients and refer to other services including other Financial Counselling services where appropriate;
  • Advising clients on how to access a range of entitlements and resources to improve their ability to manage their financial affairs.

Required Professional Qualifications & Experience

  • Diploma of Financial Counselling (or equivalent relevant qualification)
  • Membership (or eligible for membership) of a relevant financial counselling association
  • Previous demonstrated experience in assisting families in the management of financial affairs
  • Knowledge of credit and debt, hire purchase and Family Law
  • Well-developed computer literacy and skilled in the use of databases and the Microsoft Office suite
  • Well-developed interviewing skills
  • Experience in working across social sectors of the community including ethnic communities
  • Proven ability to maintain an understanding of current trends by keeping abreast of updated relevant information
  • Prior experience working in service delivery via a telephone helpline would be a distinct advantage

The Role
Applications are now invited for the position of Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner. The appointee will be responsible for providing family dispute resolution services (mediation) with specific work tasks to include:
• Identifying problem-solving options and strategies and providing assistance in clarifying clients’ problems and disputes
• Assisting parents negotiate sustainable and workable parenting plans
• Assisting parents negotiate financial settlements when these present alongside parenting issues
• Providing assessment in relation to the provision of Certificates as required by Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner Regulations
• Facilitation of group programs where required.

Required Qualifications and Experience
Prospective candidates must be able to demonstrate registration as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner together with a proven ability to work within Family Law Act. Knowledge of the effects of separation and divorce on families is essential as is an understanding of the concepts and philosophy of family dispute resolution including mediation. Other essential criteria include the ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to issues as they arise, excellent communication skills, well developed interpersonal skills and the ability to rapidly build rapport with clients.
