Better Place Australia has been selected to provide counselling and mediation services (including financial counselling) to the trial of the Department of Health and Human Services’s (DHHS) integrated model of care responding to suspected elder abuse.  Better Place Australia will work with DHHS and other partners in the trial to further develop an integrated service model for responding to elder abuse.

The role

The appointee will coordinate all client activity within the integrated model of care for responding to suspected elder abuse.  In doing so, the position holder will receive referrals from Morwell Orange Door and the local community, undertake assessment of clients’ needs and, provide and coordinate mediation, counselling and financial counselling service as required and where appropriate.  Specific duties will include:

  • Development of a close working relationship with Elder Abuse Prevention and Response Liaison Officer to ensure the best possible outcomes for clients;
  • Undertaking high-level client assessment, care planning for clients, acting as a consultant with older clients in mediation services and referring clients to services that best meet their needs;
  • Provision of counselling services to older clients where appropriate and coordination of all referrals to other services within Better Place Australia;
  • Promotion of the DHHS integrated model of care for responding to suspected elder abuse and in doing so, liaise and network with relevant community services organisations, Aged Care Services, hospitals and alike.

Applications are now invited for the position of Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner.  The appointee will be responsible for providing family dispute resolution services (mediation) with specific work tasks to include:

  • Identifying problem-solving options and strategies and providing assistance in clarifying clients’ problems and disputes
  • Assisting parents to negotiate sustainable and workable parenting plans
  • Assisting parents to negotiate financial settlements when these present alongside parenting issues
  • Providing assessment in relation to the provision of Certificates as required by Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner Regulations
  • Facilitation of group programs where required.

Required qualifications and experience

Prospective candidates must be able to demonstrate registration as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner together with a proven ability to work within Family Law Act.  Knowledge of the effects of separation and divorce on families is essential as is an understanding of the concepts and philosophy of family dispute resolution including mediation.  Other essential criteria include the ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to issues as they arise, excellent communication skills, well developed interpersonal skills and the ability to rapidly build rapport with clients.
